Brilliant ending
The Favourite movie starts developing slowly and nicely into an engaging story about unsettling ways to be the favorite of the Queen.
Unknowingly, Carlotta and I have chosen this movie to watch from just reading the title and description as it seemed it had an interesting plot, but little did we know it was from the same director Yorgos Lanthimos as the previous one we watched, “Weird Things”, also featuring Emma Stone. Yorgos’ style is incredibly recognizable, so if you like his other movies, you’ll probably also love this one, meanwhile the others not so much.
The movie takes part in the 18th century with England at war with the French. Nevertheless, during the country’s hard and dark times, the palace royalty is duck racing and pineapple eating without a hitch. An ill and vulnerable Queen Anne occupies the throne, but her close friend (or her current favorite), Lady Sarah, governs the country instead of her. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm and beauty endanger Sarah’s unique position as the Queens only trusting person. Abigail manages to get Sarah to trust her and she takes Abigail under her wing, this opportunity Abigail sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots.
When the war between Sarah and Abigail erupts, it goes to some extreme and disturbing lengths. Abigail has nothing to lose and goes all-out in order to secure her position in the palace by getting closer and closer to the Queen’s inner circle wearing the mask of a caring and lovely person.
